First week in WA

We’ve finally got the net working on the lappy, sitting at The Duke of Orleans Bay between Cape Le Grand and Cape Arid National Parks – near Esperance. A lot to write about here, been nearly a week since our first post.

From Frommy’s place we headed towards Streaky Bay and stayed just up the coast at Perlubie Beach. Did our first trek of the trip to an island which we could walk to on low tide. Jogged for about 1km of it – because it’s a great way to stay in shape… Left pretty early and headed to Ceduna. Definitely not a highlight of the trip…

Got to Scotty’s shack at Denial Bay (about 10km from Ceduna), the place was a mouse haven. After unpacking we went down the road about 30km to Davenport Beach which was amazing. Surf on one side and an inlet on the other with some pretty good sand dunes in between. A bit of a mix of the best traits of the Gap, Pondy & Bird Island. The waves were shit while we were there and it was bloody windy… That night when we went to bed with the choice of crazy mozzie’s outside or mice inside. Bennett & Matty chose the mozzie’s and Fussy and Skeat the mice… it’s hard to say who made the best choice.

The next day we ventured back into Ceduna for a shop, and headed back to the shack to pack the cars for the big trek across the Nullabor. While packing, Fussy realized he couldn’t find his wallet with Bennett mentioning that he saw it on the bumper of Skeat’s car earlier that morning . Fussy searched through all his stuff trying to find it and was devastated we he realised it had probably fallen off the car on the way to Ceduna earlier in the morning. After packing the cars we drove off slowly looking for the wallet on the side of the road. Fussy (feeling pretty shit about now) promised to buy a carton of beer if the wallet was safely found. This was great news to Matti and Bennett who had had Fussy’s wallet since it fell off Skeat’s bumper in Ceduna earlier in the morning. A happy moment for everyone really… free beer for Matti, Skeat and Bennett and Fussy’s wallet found.

On our continued journey West we checked out Cactus Beach, one of Australia’s best surf beaches, unfortunately for us it was a pretty flat day but you could tell it would be awesome with a bit of swell. We then continued the big drive West and camped the night at a lookout over the Southern Ocean about 130km from the WA border.

The next day we put in a massive drive (over 800km) and got through the fruit fly inspection station no worries (they let us keep our spuds but we had to throw out our lettuce and cucumber – devastated!). During this 800km we turned Australia’s longest straight road (146km) a little bit gay…

We spent our first night in WA at a sweet campsite about 20km south of Norseman at a place called Dundas Rocks. On our way there while looking for the sign for the turn off to the campsite Skeat a Fussy had a horse run across in front of them while sitting on about 70km/hr! Like something out of a horror movie, spooky…

Our next destination was Esperance but before we got there we came across the unusually named town of Grass Patch; unusually named due to the lack of a grass patch.

Being a Saturday in Esperance (and cause none of us had had a shower for 5 days), we decided to stay at a caravan park in town for the night and hit up the local pub. A good choice but as you could imagine we all spent way too much money… we think it was worth it. While in Esperance we also ran into some hippie chicks we met during our drive West who gave us a packet of chocolate and m&m coated donuts which they apparently got cheap at Woolies… we ate them and all agreed they were amazing. We later found out that they got them raiding the bin behind Woolies… we will probably be raiding a few bins in the next few months.

From Esperance we headed East surprisingly to Cape Le Grand National Park, home to one of the best beaches in Australia (Lucky Bay). We think with a few of our naked bodies running around it probably makes it one of the most beautiful beaches in the world…

From Lucky Bay we headed to Rossiter Bay to do some fishing… all we managed was a few small trevally, a tommy, a lost spearhead (tried to spear a massive stingray), and a lost rig (hooked a massive stingray and it took off until the entire reel of line was taken which snapped the line – shattered!).
We spent the night a Duke of Orleans Bay (because its free to camp here unlike the National Parks) where we have spent all today and caught our first meal; four massive squid caught from the rocks – a great lunch.

Cooked up some fillet steak for dinner tonight which Jacko gave us, it was amazing and was served with a side of frozen veggies, gravy and fresh squid. Will rarely eat like that over the next few months.

Awoke to the 'lovely' sound of crows talking to each other this morning at around 6am. Not too big a deal as we have basically been operating with the sun. Waking up when it rises and sleeping just after it sets. Spent today driving towards Cape Arid. The road was the most corrugated piece of crap we’ve ever been on and was 50km long. Wont be the worst we drive on though we’re guessing.

We’ll update this more often now that we’ve got some internet access. Unless we’re having too much fun doing other stuff – which will most likely happen…

Welcome

Hello everyone, welcome to our blog.

Scott Carmichael, Matt Fuss, Matt Leaney and Matt Bennett are group of mates from Moonta, South Australia who are packing up the 4WD's to embark on a roadtrip around the coast of Western Australia and Northern Territory. The trip of a lifetime!

To keep all our family and friends up-to-date with our adventures we will update the blog as often as we can with stories of our travels and pictures of the people we meet and places we visit.

To support us on our adventures is this goon fiend sloth called Gilbert.

Gilbert loves adventures, hanging out at the beach, meeting new people and drinking goon... we share a lot of common interests.

Anyways I hope you enjoy the blog.
